Ont. aboriginal community evacuated amid flood fears

Residents in the flood-prone northern Ontario aboriginal community of Kashechewan were being evacuated Friday as melting ice has caused water levels to rise rapidly.

Local leaders declared an emergency, prompting the evacuation.

TORONTO, April 25 /CNW/ - First Nation leaders, First Nation citizens and supporters held a Unity Rally for the jailed Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) leaders and the KI community on April 23, 2008 at Queen's Park. "This Rally was organized at the request of the Chiefs in Ontario to show our support for the KI 6 and for the people of KI" said Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse.

The Chiefs of Keewaytinook Okimakanak wrapped up another successful Board of Directors meeting after reviewing and approving 2008-2009 program budgets, discussing issues and priorities affecting both their First Nations and their tribal council organization, meeting with INAC visitors and passing a number of resolutions providing program staff with direction to continue their work of developing and delivering programs and services that address community and organizational requirements.
