Network access has been restored. The problem was a defective part in the Bell Canada Central office in Toronto. Thank you for your patience

Internet access was reduced this afternoon and this evening. The problems are occuring in Toronto. Our internet provider has been working on this and we are working with Bell Canada to determine where the problem is. We will post a second message here once it is corrected. The K-Net Email system is still flowing as this goes out over a different path. Thank you for your patience.

Abe Scatch Memorial School web site is now on-line

Two teachers from Poplar Hill (Kurt MacRae and Tom Axtell) posted the Abe Scatch Memorial School web site on April 27, 2001. The web site was created using Netscape composer. Check out the school's web site at http://www.abescatch.myknet.org/Scatch/index.htm Tom writes ... "Next week, I will be working with the grade 8's to make their own simple pages to link to this site. You can let Kurt know he's joined the club!!"

Keewaytinook Okimakanak hosts Industry Canada - FedNor

The Chiefs of Keewaytinook Okimakanak and their staff hosted a feast and meeting with Industry Canada - FedNor staff (Louise Paquette, the Director General, Rob Stincombe, Northwest Regional Manager, Mitch Diabo, Heidi Strobl and Fran Duke) on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 in Balmertown. Fire claims the life of a Sandy Lake woman

A tragedic early morning fire claimed the life of a Sandy Lake woman, Delilah Meekis, age 32 on April 13, 2001. As of this posting her partner Mervin Meekis age 38 is still missing. Fire Marshall Ralph Waffer from Thunder Bay And N.A.P.S Officer Sgt. Jim Hiller from Sioux Lookout are investigating. Investigators confirmed that Mervin Meekis was not in the building that was destroyed by fire. Aerial and ground search has now started on April 14 for Mervin Meekis. Today the body of Delilah Meekis will be flown out for autopsy. Funeral arrangements are panding autopsy completion. Delilah Meekis is leaving behind two young children.

Employment Opportunity - HEALTH PROGRAM ASSISTANT

The Keewaytinook Okimakanak Health Program is seeking an individual to assist in carrying out services to its member First Nations in the area of health programming. This individual will be supervised by the Health Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist First Nations Health Coordinators with setting up and maintaining the health programs at the community including, but not limited to Brighter Futures and Long Term Care
  • Assist with updating community health needs assessments
  • Assist First Nations in establishing and providing health training programs
  • Assist in the development of proposals for community based initiatives
  • Assist in all other health department duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post secondary education in nursing or social services preferred
  • minimum 2 years experience in the health field in the area of delivery of community based programs or equivalent
  • experience in facilitating workshops and training small groups
  • good writing skills for proposals, workplans and reports
  • strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to travel extensively in the North
  • knowledge of First Nations in Treaty 5 & 9, an asset

SALARY Commensurate with experience

Employment Opportunity - ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

Keewaytinook Okimakanak is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual to work in the Finance Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General Ledger maintenance, including updating accounts and creating reports
  • preparation of financial reports for management, the board, and funding agencies
  • to assist with providing technical and analytical support in financial reporting for programs
  • maintain filing system of all contracts, contribution agreements, lease agreements, purchases and any other financial commitments
  • prepare Accounts Receivable/Invoicing to Industry Canada, FedNor, NOHF, and other funding agencies
  • assist in all other finance department duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • proven experience working in the accounting field, non profit accounting preferred
  • post secondary education in business, accounting, and/or commerce
  • experience working with computerized accounting packages, spreadsheets, and word processing
  • strong analytical and problem solving skills; good communication and interpersonal skills
  • knowledge of First Nations in Treaty 5 & 9, an asset

SALARY Commensurate with experience

KO First Nations part of Northern Ontario's Telehealth Project

Keewaytinook Okimakanak First Nations and Health Services is teaming up with the NORTH Network and all the hospitals across Northern Ontario to develop and deliver a number of health care programs using Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Orpah McKenzie, Keewaytinook Okimakanak's Health Director attended the announcement in Thunder Bay on Monday, March 20, 2001.
