The community of Keewaywin had a Canada Day Jamboree, where the local talent came out to show their stuff. I talked to one of the organizers and he said he was really surprised at the turn out of talented people who wished to participate.
We had hot dogs served and the Chief and his wife went door to door serving a huge cake, which had Canada Day written on it. As our community is sparsly populated of about 200 to 300 people half of them children everyone was pleasantly surprised at the huge turn out for the Jamboree.
We started out with christian music then ended the night with heavy rock. There were a total of 4 to 5 bands which participated and a slew of singers. Everyone participated by being there.

Jamboree Pictures.

A two and half day training workshop was held in Keewaywin for the Homemaker trainees. Each participant completed a questionaire prior to the training to assist in the development of the lesson plan for the training.
The main topics covered included: nutrition, cleaning and home safety. Trainees practiced patient transfers, lifts and making an occupied bed. Preparing oatmeal bannock and other nutritious snacks was also covered in the training.
The trainers from Keewaytinook Okimakanak Health Services were Marney Dodic, a Registered Nurse and Phyllis Chowaniec, a Registered Practical Nurse.
The Trainees included Betty Meekis, Laurie Kakegamic, Martha Rae and Derry Kakegamic.
Trainees came to the e-centre this afternoon to work on the computers using the Web-CT e-learning tool to access more information about their training program. This is where we will be providing technical support for the trainees once the trainers leave the community. There is also a toll-free number everyone can call to get assistance from Marney or Phyllis, if there are any questions or concerns about the homemakers program (1-800-387-3740 - Northern Chiefs' Balmertown office).

Keewaywin had a fun night on the 17th of May. We had a cribbage tournament with only sixteen openings. It had a good turn out. And the Winner was me,(David McKay). I lost in the first round to Diane Kakegamic and went on to the "B" side while Diane went to the "A" side.
It was a winner take all game. Players were given two chances at the pot. side "A" and "B" competed for the championship. I had a close game against Charlotte Kakegamic for the top spot on the "B" side while Dusty Kakegamic and Miranda Black competed for the "A" side. Dusty won the A side while I won the B side. I beat Dusty kakegamic for the championship in two games out of three. Yeah!!!

This week on April 22nd to the 26th 2002. Keewaywin had their first visit from a dentist. Dennis Hewitt is from Toronto and is home based in Sioux Lookout. He works out of the Sioux Lookout Zone hospital. So i'm sure most of the northern residents who go to the zone will recongize him.
As this is Keewaywin's first dental visit. The equipments had to be flown in from Sioux Lookout, most of the equipment was late in getting in and the first day they did no fillings, just tooth extractions (ouch). The X-ray machine was flown in from Deer Lake, but not all the parts came in so it was pretty useless. The dental charts had to be made from scratch. The chair assembled. And a new dental assistant trained. But it is rewarding to have a dentist to come into our community.

On the 2nd of April the community of Keewaywin had an election nomination meeting in Keewaywin. There was a lot of community participation in deciding on who should be running for chief and council.
Yesterday the mail in ballots were sent out to all community members that reside outside of the community. They are given the chance like all in resident community members to cast in their votes. The mail in ballots also includes a self addressed stamped envelope, so that all they have to do is mark an X besides the candidates that they wish to chose. And just drop it in at any mailbox, or you can just send it anyway you want. You may send it it by plane or have it hand delivered
Remember as soon as your mail in ballots come in the mail try to send it in as soon as you can, as we don't know when the mail for the ballots will come in. There is a deadline for the mail in ballots to be received which is on the 29th of April.
The following are the nominees for the upcoming election which will be held at the band office on the 30th of April 2002.
