Ottawa, Ontario (June 21, 2011) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and Shawn Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, today officially launched an engagement process to explore solutions that will improve First Nation elementary and secondary education on reserve.

Municipality of Sioux Lookout Receives Evacuees from Mishkeegogamang First Nation
Sioux Lookout’s Emergency Control Group (ECG) was assembled at 8:00 p.m. on June 21, 2011, to implement plans to receive up to 200 evacuees from Mishkeegogamang First Nation (also known as Osnaburgh). The voluntary evacuation was triggered by an ongoing smoke alert resulting from a nearby forest fire, which, as of Tuesday evening, was approximately 16-18km east of the First Nation community and being affected by strong easterly winds.

Ontario First Nations establish parallel process to National Panel on First Nations education

First Nations in Ontario are establishing a strategy to engage in a parallel process to that of the National Panel and develop a report to be submitted to the National Chief and the INAC Minister to coincide with the National Panel submission.
