SLAAMB Seeking Applicants for Pre-Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship, C of Q and Employment Opportunities

The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board is seeking interested applicants from the catchment/CAAR area to participate in the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research Project (CAAR) and train as pre-apprentices and apprentices. We are also looking for candidates who may qualify for training and tutoring to challenge the certificate of qualification (C of Q) exam in their respective trade.

PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: (Carpentry, Electrical & Plumbing)

As a Pre-apprentice you will learn your chosen trade in 26 weeks through a combination of on-line learning (12 weeks) from your own community, in-classroom instruction (6 weeks) in Sioux Lookout and job placement of 240 hrs (6 - 8 weeks). An allowance of $ 735.00 per month is available providing that assignments are complete and regular attendance is maintained. Location of the job placement is optional. It can either be in Sioux Lookout, another urban area or in your community, providing supervision is available and acceptable to SLAAMB and MTCU. Upon completion of this program, you will be classified as a level 1 apprentice. There are 4 levels an apprentice must complete before he or she is able to write the certificate of qualification exam.

The next intake of this program offered in partnership with Confederation College is scheduled to start October 14, 2008 .

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM:

Have you been working in your community as a carpenter, electrician or plumber for a few years? You may qualify to register as an Apprentice with MTCU or the Union . You will need your prior learning experience verified by your past employers. After you register as an apprentice, we can help you find a placement in the construction of the Meno-ya-win Hospital or the Hostel. The starting salary is about 45 % of journeyman's wages. After the probation period of 60 days, your pay will be based on your assessment and level of skill. Once you obtain the required hours, you are eligible to write the certificate of qualification provincial exam in your chosen trade.

SLAAMB can help you with this process. If you are interested in earning a wage while you are training, please contact any of the CAAR Team members at 1-800-563-2183 or 807-737-4047 for more information.

C of Q Training & Tutoring Program:

If you have worked for your community or any other employer either as a carpenter, electrician, or a plumber and you have worked more than 5 – 10 years (depending on trade), you may qualify for our C of Q Training & Tutoring Program. Commitment to stay and study in Sioux Lookout for 10 weeks (one week in Dryden) is required as candidates will receive safety certificate training (ie: Fall Arrest, First Aid, Hoisting & Rigging, etc.) and tutoring to challenge the provincial exam for the certificate of qualification in their chosen trade. We can help you with your travel, accommodations and a living expense of $ 240.00 per week. In addition, we can provide you with translation services so you can better understand the exam questions. Upon completion of this program, participants may seek employment with contractors who will be responsible for the construction of the Hospital and Hostel in Sioux Lookout or return to their home communities to act as journeymen and take on apprentices.

The next intake of the C of Q Training & Tutoring Program offered in partnership with Confederation College is scheduled to start September 29, 2008 (beginning with two weeks of e-learning).
