Young Aboriginal Women's Summer Workshop Series being hosted by PARO in Thunder Bay

PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise is hosting a Young Aboriginal Women Summer Workshop series. 

Jan Hardy of the Aboriginal Mentorship program and Pauline Fogarty, Program Development Intern are hosting the series to create financial literacy skills among youth as well as generating money management skills for participants. 

All workshops are taking place on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in July and August. 

They are free of cost and targeted to young Aboriginal women, though everyone is welcome to attend.

Workshop topics are as follows:

Wednesday, July 7, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Building a Healthy Economy

  • Aboriginal resource management strategies
  • The flow of money through our community
  • Actions we can take to build a healthier community economy 

Wednesday, July 14, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Developing a Spending Plan

  • Develop savings goals
  • Develop a spending plan
  • Use your spending plan to meet your financial needs and goals 

Wednesday, July 21, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.    Working with Chequing and Savings Accounts

  • The purpose and benefits of checking and savings accounts
  • How to open an account
  • Activities involved in using and managing an account 

Wednesday, July 28, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Understanding Credit and Your Credit Report

  • The purpose of credit
  • The importance of your credit history
  • How to read and analyze a credit report
  • Steps you can take to correct errors on your credit report
  • Steps you can take to build, maintain, and rebuild your credit 

Wednesday, August  4, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Accessing Credit, Part 1

  • The lending Process
  • The five Cs of credit
  • Planning a strong loan application
  • Competing a loan application

Wednesday, August 11, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Accessing Credit, Part 2

  • Different types of financial institutions
  • How to evaluate loan rates, terms and fees
  • Ways to identify and avoid predatory lending
  • The importance of insurance
