Breaking the Moodle Mould creating new e-learning opportunities for First Nation students

This spring, Fernando Oliveira and Angela Batsford are teaming up to create an online course for the Ned Supplementary Online Courses Program (www.ned.knet.ca). The Learning Strategies course (GLS10) will be offered to grade 8 students in First Nation schools across Ontario starting in the fall of 2010. This “reach-ahead” program will allow grade 8 students to attain a grade 9 half-credit.

Using the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), Angela and Fernando hope to “Break the Moodle Mould” by developing a course that utilizes some of the newest and most promising eLearning tools available.

One of the first steps will be to explore the many Moodle modules and plug-ins that are out there. Over the next month, the Breaking-the-Moodle-Mould project (www.bmm.knet.ca) will evaluate a number of third-party Modules and Plug-ins. If you use Moodle and you want to explore a new way of developing your courses, then you are invited to drop in at www.bmm.knet.ca.

This informal workshop will run from May 17 to June 20, 2010. For more informaion, please send an email to fernandooliveira@knet.ca
