The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced the completion of construction of an innovative eight-unit housing development for Saugeen First Nation in Ontario.
This project was made possible thanks to an investment of $1.17 million under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“We are very proud to have been a major funding partner in this project,” said Minister Strahl. “Our government recognizes that access to safe and affordable housing is essential for improving economic and social outcomes and supporting healthy, sustainable First Nation communities.”
The Saugeen First Nation Green Building Project is one of the biggest CEAP building projects in Ontario. It was completed within a very short timeframe, with construction starting on December 14, 2009, and culminating in today’s community grand opening of the eight-unit facility.
The Saugeen housing project created an estimated 10 to 12 jobs for each day it took to build the housing units and gave youth in the community the opportunity to train on-the-job and learn tangible skills.
This housing project is one of 13 multi-unit housing developments being funded under Canada’s Economic Action Plan on-reserve housing initiative in Ontario. CEAP has also invested funding in Ontario for the renovation of 635 housing units, servicing of 187 lots for future housing development and the upgrading of 71 housing units for First Nation member home ownership.
The eight-unit building uses numerous energy-efficient approaches to construction, including 11-inch super stud framing, integration of various solar systems, triple-glazed windows, insulated concrete foundation, high energy heat recovery ventilators, drain water heat recovery and solar-heated floors.
This project is also part of the $400 million to support First Nations nationally for the construction of new on-reserve housing, renovations, or existing social housing, and for complementary housing activities under CEAP.
