KERC's First Nations Successful School Program Photography and Story Telling Project

Kwayaciiwin Education Resource Centre's FNSSP Photography and Story Telling Project

Sioux Lookout region First Nation schools (Grades 4 to 6) are invited to join this exciting pilot project being supported within the Nishnawbe Aski Nation First Nations Success Schools project (http://fnssp.knet.ca).

WHAT?

The project involves the use of digital cameras to stimulate student interest in writing.  Cameras will be provided for teachers to use with the students.

The goals are:
1.  To promote writing and story-telling skills;
2.  To produce student writing that will be shared in the district; and
3.  To raise the self-estemm of students and communities.

HOW?

Cameras will be provided to a small number of classes in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to operate the pilot project beginning in September 2010.  Teachers will manage the cameras and with the assistance of Kwayaciiwin, develop activities which focus on photography and writing.  In the Spring of 2011, the work produced in classrooms will be collected by Kwayaciiwin and will be published as a collection.  The collection will be shared in the district.  Classes who complete the project may keep the cameras.

WHEN?

Any teachers interested are asked to contact Frank Hovi at frankhovi@knet.ca or at 737-1135 EXT. 8001.  Classes will be chosen on a "first come, first served" basis.
