Muskrat Dam First Nation Explores Hydroelectric Power - McGuinty Government Helping Build Green Energy, Create Green Jobs

February 16, 2010

A Northwestern Ontario First Nations community is looking into developing a hydroelectric generating facility to help reduce energy costs and environmental impacts.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is supporting efforts by Muskrat Dam First Nation to determine the feasibility of a one-megawatt powerplant at Windigo Falls.

If plans and approvals proceed, the new facility could create up to 10 jobs during construction and two full-time positions to operate it.

QUOTE

“Our government is helping this remote northern community pursue its goal to enhance quality of life and develop economic opportunities for residents.”
Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and Chair of the NOHFC.

“Muskrat Dam’s proposal is a great example of how Ontario and First Nations are working together to plan for a cleaner, greener, more-sustainable future.”
Chris Bentley, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs

QUICK FACTS

  • The NOHFC is providing $100,000 to this project through the Northern Energy Program, designed to help northern businesses and organizations capitalize on energy opportunities, pursue clean alternatives and reduce their demand on external energy sources.
  • Ontario has more than 250,000 lakes and tens of thousands of kilometres of rivers and streams. About 50 lakes and river systems currently provide all of Ontario’s installed water power.
  • Ontario’s waterpower industry directly employs more than 1,600 people and supports another 2,000 jobs.
