FNSSP  News  Bites  # 1

Dec. 16 ‘09

Exciting times are ahead as Kwayaciiwin Education Resource Centre embarks on developing and delivering  a new program , the First Nation Student Success Program (FNSSP).

The goals of FNSSP for communities in the Sioux Lookout district are to:

  • Support First Nations to plan and make improvements in three priority areas: literacy, numeracy and student retention;

  • Improve student and school outcomes and results; and,

  • Assist schools in assessing and tracking how their students are performing.

Kwayaciiwin is asking communities who have School Improvement Plans already to please send them down to us. These plans will be reviewed and from that it will be determined how to work towards implementation of the plans.  Please mail, fax (807-737-2882) or e-mail the plans to margareta@nnec.on.ca.

DEPC has approved a district-wide literacy training (Remediation Plus) for the schools that are part of FNSSP.  This training will take place on Jan. 26, 27, 28 in Sioux Lookout and the participants will be 2 teachers from each school (Kgn and Gr. 1/2, or special education teacher).  All costs will be covered for this training. More information on this can be found on the web site  http://remediationplus.com.  The literacy materials that go with the training will be purchased for each participant.

A district meeting of Education Directors and LEA Chairpersons will be held on Feb. 2, 3, 4 at the Friendship Centre in Sioux Lookout.  The agenda will include items such as KERC as a stand-alone organization, implementation of the KERC curriculum, strategic planning for the FNSSP.

There are a number of employment opportunities available for the FNSSP. These are posted on the KERC web site (kwayaciiwin.com) and also on K-Net.  KERC is also cost-sharing with K-Net to provide funding for a local staff person to act as FNSSP liaison at the community level.

More updates to come in the New  Year.  Looking forward to working with you and wishing you a Merry Christmas.
