Ontario press release
September 16, 2009
Aboriginal workers in Northwestern Ontario will soon be able to train for jobs in forestry, tourism and mining at a new education facility.
With support from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), three classrooms and a residence for instructors will be built to help about 300 individuals train for new careers. The facility will also create new employment for five people, plus local construction jobs.
This project will be managed by the Pikangikum First Nation’s Whitefeather Forest Management Corporation in collaboration with Confederation College.
“By investing in these new training facilities, we are helping prepare young First Nation members for jobs that are expected to be created through the community’s Whitefeather Forest initiatives.”
- Minister Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and Chair of the NOHFC
“Providing access to more education and training opportunities in remote communities will help Aboriginal workers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to find a good job closer to home.”
