Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation  EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Community Legal Worker 3-Month Full-Time Contract Description: Currently NALSC is seeking to hire (1) Community Legal Worker on a three-month contract based in Sioux Lookout. The Corporation employs a number of Community Legal Workers who provide legal, paralegal, and law-related services to members of Nishnawbe-Aski Nation.  The Corporation functions as an Area Office of Legal Aid Ontario.  Where a NAN member requires the services of a lawyer, the community legal worker will help the member make an application to Legal Aid Ontario and assist Clients and their families in all Court matters.   Qualifications:¨     

  • Successful completion of Secondary School and/or equivalent experience in a related field;
  • experience with the Euro-Canadian legal system and knowledge of Aboriginal legal systems;
  • ability to work in a cross-cultural environment;
  • good command of the English language;
  • ability to speak the Oji-Cree language fluently;
  • willingness to communicate with others about law-related and traditional issues;
  • must be willing and able to travel.

COMMUNITY LEGAL WORKER

Summarized Job Description Community Legal Workers provide services by:·        

  • taking legal aid applications either by phone or in person;
  • finding lawyers for people who need legal counsel;
  • making referrals and other routine administrative assistance;
  • referring legal advice or short service questions to advice lawyers;
  • assisting people on Advance Days and in Court;
  • assisting the Courts and Duty Counsel;
  • updating Chief and Council when requested;
  • helping Defense Counsel with translating, arranging meetings, interviews with witnesses, and updating files;
  • helping Clients understand the legal process; and,
  • assist in the delivery of workshops in the communities for other programs of the Corporation related to justice in restorative justice, victim/witness, public legal education, and special projects.
