National Chief Shawn Atleo Sets Forward Looking Agenda for Assembly of First Nations

OTTAWA, July 27 /CNW Telbec/ - Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo is embarking on a strategic and forward looking agenda for the AFN. The new National Chief was elected on July 23rd at the recent AFN Annual General Assembly in Calgary, Alberta.

"I had the privilege to speak and listen to hundreds of Chiefs and First Nations citizens during my campaign - Elders, youth, men and women. I now have the opportunity to act on the wisdom and guidance I received," stated National Chief Atleo. "I am honoured to be chosen by our people to advocate for positive change, and I am preparing for my imminent transition to Ottawa so I can begin the challenging work ahead. As I said during the campaign: it's our time"

National Chief Atleo ran on a comprehensive campaign that focused on four pillars and highlighted issues such as education, Treaty implementation, economic sustainability, relationship building and strengthening First Nations governments.

"Education must be a tool that strengthens and supports our language, culture and history and that ensures participation in strong and sustainable economies. The recent H1N1 outbreak in First Nations communities shows that the poverty and poor conditions in our communities make us much more vulnerable," said the National Chief. We need to ensure our communities are prepared for pandemics and any real long term solutions need to address fundamental structural changes, recognition and implementation of our governments. Giving life to our treaties will ensure that our governments have the opportunity and mechanisms to chart their own course.

The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations in Canada.
