Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board
The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board under the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research (CAAR) Project is seeking applicants for the following programs:
PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: (Carpentry & Plumbing) 28 Weeks
This 28-week program offers communication, math and computer skills development, job readiness/employment skills training and introduces theory and practical hands-on training of the selected trade. It is delivered through a combination of on-line learning (12 weeks) from your own community, in-classroom instruction (6 weeks) in Sioux Lookout, Safety Certificate training (2 weeks) in Sioux Lookout and a job placement of 240 hrs (8 weeks). Location of the job placement can either be in Sioux Lookout, another urban area or in your community, providing supervision is available and acceptable to SLAAMB, Confederation College and MTCU. Upon successful completion of this program, you have an opportunity to sign up as an apprentice. Placement hours obtained can be accredited to your apprenticeship hours at a later time. A training allowance of $ 735.00 per month is available bi-weekly and payable to those who attend every day and complete homework and assignments. Interested applicants are reminded that effort and commitment to complete homework and assignments will play a key role to your success in the program. The next intake of this program offered in partnership with Confederation College is tentatively scheduled to begin August 31, 2009.
C of Q Exam Preparation Program (Carpentry) - 22 Weeks
If you have worked as a carpenter for more than 7 years, you may qualify for the twenty (22) week Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) Exam Preparation Program. To sufficiently prepare for the exam, the program offers tutoring in residential, commercial and industrial construction applications, math upgrading and hands-on trade practices. Program will be delivered in Sioux Lookout. Travel costs and accommodations will be covered by SLAAMB. A living expense of $315.00 per week is available to the participants not on Employment Insurance (EI) or participants can continue to collect EI. After successfully passing the trade exam, participants can seek employment with contractors at the construction of the Meno-ya-win Health Centre and Hostel or return to their home communities as journeymen and take on apprentices.
