McGuinty Government Helps Build Technical Skills and Expertise

Ontario is providing 105 First Nations with the resources they need to strengthen their communities, build their local economies and play an active role in Ontario's prosperity.

Through the New Relationship Fund, Ontario will invest $9.5 million to help these First Nation communities hire staff with the skills and expertise needed to help to improve communication inside and outside their community.

These positions could include people responsible for strengthening links with governments and the private sector, as well as traditional teachers, foresters and economic development officers.

This funding will enhance and improve business and economic development partnership opportunities, helping to improve the quality of life for First Nation communities in Ontario.

QUICK FACTS

  • The New Relationship Fund was developed with input from Aboriginal partners.
  • A fund to provide resources and skills to Aboriginal communities and organizations was a key recommendation of The Report of the Ipperwash Inquiry released in May 2007.
  • Including the $9.5 million investment, the New Relationship Fund has allocated $13.4 million since it was launched last year.
