Student Counselors & Prime Workers Required
Keewaytinook Okimakanak Student Support Services is looking to fill two positions. Student Counsellors & Prime Workers for the upcoming school year (July 2009 to June 2010). The students will be coming from our First Nation communities of Fort Severn, Keewaywin, Deer Lake, North Spirit Lake, Poplar Hill, and McDowell Lake.
Student Counsellors
Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Education or School Counseling from an accredited University or College
- High expectations for all students
- Familiarity with First Nation Culture
- Ability to speak one of the local dialects is an asset
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Must be willing to provide a police criminal background and child abuse registry checks before hiring
Desired Experience
- Knowledge of child development—specifically of physical, emotional, and developmental patterns
- A team player with experience working in a collaborative environment
- Professional manner and appearance
- Ability to listen to and communicate with parents and see parents as a resource
- Possesses conflict resolution skills
- Is patient and caring
- Demonstrate effectiveness in personal and office management skills
- Uses good organizational skills to meet the needs of the clients
- Believes successful learning comes from a collaboration between all student service providers
- Is capable of working with small and large groups of students
- Experience in school and counseling environments
Salary will be based on a combination of qualifications and experience.
Prime Workers
Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Counseling
- High expectations for all students
- Familiarity with First Nation Culture

Duties will include, but may not be limited to:
- Transporting students to their appointments;
- Providing support for Counsellors in planning and implementing extra-curricular activities;
- Supervision of Student attendance, progress and behaviour;
- Assisting Counsellors in planning Student Case Conferences;
- Providing support for Counsellors in planning and implementing Student academic tutoring sessions;
- Providing support for Counsellors in planning for boarding home parent relief; and
- Providing emergency assistance and support for Counsellors and Students.
Salary will be based on a combination of qualifications and experience.
