SLAAMB running final C of Q Exam Preparation Courses for Carpenters in Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board

ATTENTION CARPENTERS

The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board under the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research (CAAR) Project is seeking interested applicants to participate in its Certificate of Qualification Exam Preparation Program for Carpenters.

The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board through the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Research Project has been sponsoring a three year pilot project to enable aboriginal candidates to receive trade certification. This project started in April 2007 and will end March 31, 2010. This will be the final fiscal year this project will be delivered.

To participate in the project you will need to have worked as a carpenter for the past seven years or more, or have accumulated 7,200 hours of work experience as a carpenter. You will need your work experience verified by letter by your employer(s) and provide two references who can attest to your experience as a carpenter.

This program is for twenty-two (22) weeks and it offers tutoring in residential, commercial and industrial construction applications, math upgrading and hands-on trade practices to enable a carpenter to be successful in challenging the carpentry trade exam. To pass the exam, a carpenter will need a mark of 70% or over. If the carpenter is successful, he or she will be certified as journeyman carpenter.

There is a onetime participation cost of $3,000.00 for applicants from outside the SLAAMB catchment area. The project will pay for all expenses, including airfares, accommodations, course fees and a weekly allowance of $315.00.

After successfully passing the trade exam, participants can seek employment with contractors at the construction of the Meno-ya-win Health Centre and Hostel or return to their home communities as journeymen carpenters. This next intake of the C of Q Exam Preparation Program offered in partnership with Confederation College is scheduled to begin May 18, 2009. This program is offered to all Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Treaty Three communities.
