CAAR offering last C of Q Exam Preparation Program running in April 2009 at SLAAMB

C of Q Exam Preparation Program (Carpentry)

If you have worked as a carpenter for more than 5 - 7 years, you may  qualify  for our new 'integrated' thirty (30) week C of Q Exam Preparation Program.

While the previous intakes prepared participants to challenge the C of Q exam in three different trades, CAAR will be offering this program for  carpentry only. With four sessions in Sioux Lookout along with a three level curriculum that will lead to formal recognition of each level  combined  with hands-on application of carpentry theory and mathematics through  distance learning (28 weeks) and an examination tutorial in the end 2  weeks, it accommodates participants to remain in their communities for a  majority of time.

To sufficiently prepare for the exam, participants will  gain a strong comprehensive foundation of specific trade theory integrated  with hands on assignments and applications, shop training, online study  and  video conferencing. Mathematics and 50% of hands-on application of   carpentry theory will be studied using distance learning technologies such  as Centra/Moodle and Sky Pack. Twenty-one applicants from four to five  different communities will be admitted into the program with a minimum of  four per community, or five per community respectively.

Travel costs and  accommodations for sessions held in Sioux Lookout will be covered by  SLAAMB.  A living expense of $315.00 per week is available to the participants not  on Employment Insurance (EI) or participants can continue to collect EI.  After  successfully passing the trade exam, participants can seek employment with  contractors at the construction of the Meno-ya-win Health Centre and Hostel or return to their home communities as journeymen and take on apprentices.

This newly revised C of Q Exam Preparation Program offered in partnership  with Confederation College is scheduled to begin APRIL 2009. This will be  the final C of Q Exam Preparation Program offered through the Centre for Aboriginal Apprenticeship Project (CAAR).
