Job Description: Event, Fundraising & Communications Coordinator
Position Summary: The Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee (SLARC) is a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors dedicated to positive community race relations. Reporting to the Board Executive, the Event, Fundraising & Communications Coordinator manages events, identifies funding and partnership opportunities, writes grant proposals and reports, coordinates a wide scale community consultation with the region’s First Nations leaders, and communicates with the media.
Duration: This is a full-time (35 hr/wk) one-year contract position.
Qualifications:
These requirements must be met:
• Recent graduate of an accredited college or university.
• 29 years of age or younger.
Requirements of the position with SLARC:
- Experience or interest in working toward improved race relations in a cross-cultural environment.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
- Total competence in written and spoken English.
- Fluency in Anishiniimowin an asset.
- Proven research skills.
- Excellent organization skills, research, written and computer skills are required.
- Understanding of historic and contemporary issues affecting First Nations People.
- Familiarity with Sioux Lookout community, Lac Seul community, and northern First Nations communities an asset.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Grant Writing
- Research government funding and foundations and work with the executive board in developing proposals to appropriate programs; this will include development of budgets
- Event Management
o Work with advisory committees, volunteers and staff organizing Rae Relations Week (March 2009) and SLARC in the Summer (National Day of Healing and Reconciliation, May 26; National Aboriginal Day, June 21; Bannock Bake-Off and Sioux Mountain Festival, early August 2008)
- First Nations Consultation
o Work with SLARC’S partnership Development Committee (made up of Board members, community and Chamber of Commerce representatives) in wide scale community consultation being planned, targeting First Nations leaders, First Nations organizations, and the business community.
- Communications
o Draft media releases and work with the Board executive in executing SLARC’S communications Strategy. Media interviews with print, radio and television media will also be expected.
- Other tasks as dictated by need, opportunity or Intern’s interests
