Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee Press Release
Sioux Lookout (November 20, 2008) – the Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee announces the premiere of Bounce, a play created by Sioux Lookout youth about racial tensions.
The play will be performed at Queen Elizabeth High School for the community on December 3rd, 2008 at 7pm. There is no charge but donations to SLARC youth arts programming are encouraged.
“They’ve succeeded in creating a powerful and moving piece about the realities of racism” said project coordinator Erin Horvath. “I’ve watched a transformation take place within the group from the time they began learning about hate related crimes in March to now, when they’ve put together a great play with lots of depth, humour and insight.”
“Really, really good! I like it!” was Tomson Highway’s feedback when he saw a scene from the play during his visit to the youth centre last month. Others present at the time were brought to tears by the depth of feeling in the actors’ performances.
Bounce is the culmination of SLARC’s Youth Against Hate Crimes Project funded by Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General’s Community Hate-crimes Response Grants Program. Different phases of the project have included guest speakers, guided discussions and an art exhibit called Beneath the Surface.
