Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission forming a Survivors' Committee

INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS SURVIVOR COMMITTEE

As part of the implementation of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA), the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is interested in receiving applications from individuals, survivors, Aboriginal organizations, and others familiar with the operation of Indian Residential Schools in Canada, to serve on the Indian Residential Schools Survivor Committee (IRSSC).

The establishment of the IRSSC is mandated under Section 7, Schedule N of the IRSSA. The 10 member Survivor Committee will serve as an advisory body to the Commission throughout the five year mandate of the Commission and will be compensated on a per diem basis. The majority of the members will be former residential schools students. It is estimated that the IRSSC will meet 20-25 days per year.

The responsibilities for the IRSSC are:

  • to ensure that the voices of survivors are represented, heard and accurately reflected when providing advice and recommendations to the Commission.

The role of the IRSSC is to provide advice and recommendations to the Commission on:

  • the characteristics of a "community" for the purposes of participation in the Commission processes;
  • the criteria for the community and national processes;
  • the evaluation of the Commemoration proposals;
  • the selection and appointment of Regional Liaisons; and
  • if called upon, provide information to the public regarding the Commission.

The successful candidates should have experience dealing with social policy issues, experience working as a member of a board or a committee, and experience working with Aboriginal communities.

The successful candidates should be knowledgeable of the IRS Settlement Agreement and the mandate of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. General knowledge of the broader social context and implication of the IRS system is necessary.

The suitable candidates should have the ability to motivate in a manner that respects diverse backgrounds and perspectives on complex issues. The selected candidates must be able to think strategically and holistically, and to integrate various disciplines.
