Pelican Falls First Nations HS students share their e-Spirit experience

Jocelynn Petawanick from North Caribou First Nation (Weagamow Lake) and Rena Kakegamic from Keewaywin First Nation (both students at Pelican Falls First Nations High School) write about their e-Spirit Conference experience ...

E-Spirit Day #1:

Jocelynn:

Two things that were amazing to me on this trip todate were the Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park.  We had a six hour lay-over in Calgary and took full advantage of the time.  The Rockies were powerful, tall, beautiful and amazing.

The second great moment was presenting my business plan with my team mates, I felt nervous, scared, happy to have the chance to present and glad it was over in the end.  If you wish to view our business concept, click on the attachment.

Rena:

This has been a new experience for me and I like it.  During day one of the E-Spirit Competition, I enjoyed our presentation, the feelings of nervousness and I never thought I could do something like that.  I took away a feeling of confidence from our execution in delivery.

Title:  E-Spirit - Can we go again next year?

I wish to say "Booshoo" to all of NAN.  Two key points I have gained from the conference is to present in front of a large crowd (100+) and that felt amazing.  I spoke in Ojibway and English during the presentation, which confused me a bit, going back and forth but I was glad I did that.  The second important lesson I achieved was the importance of thinking positive about myself and Four Seasons Sports Team.  A cool thing that happened was Joey Cappo/Rapper presented, sang/freestyling, I listen to his music so it was great to hear him in person.

One piece of advice I would give the students reading this is to think positive and have safe fun!  You should join E-Spirit next year, it is a lot of fun!

The trip to Regina, Saskatchewan for the E-Spirit Competition was a good experience for me.  I never thought I would do something like that.  The first few days I was kind of nervous, presenting our slideshow to the audience and judges.  When it was time to do our Trade Show, I felt more comfortable around the people.  There were many interesting businesses and people involved in the conference.  What I learned through the BDC E-Spirit Gathering, is being an entrepreneur requires giving long hours of work and it is a life-long learning experience.  I would recommend the youth of NAN become involved with the BDC/E-Spirit experience for next year.  I enjoyed the time I spent working on my business plan and it pays off at the end with a trip to the conference.  Not only did we travel but we won a new Dell computer which was donated to PFFNHS on behalf of my team and Mrs. Buswa's BDI 3C class.

Next year I am interested in participating in E-Spirit again!  It was fun!
