NAN Grand Chief and AFN National Chief to visit jailed KI leaders on Good Friday

NATIONAL CHIEF TO VISIT JAILED KI LEADERSHIP

THUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Stan Beardy and Deputy Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler will welcome Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Phil Fontaine during a visit with KI leaders at both correctional facilities in Thunder Bay tomorrow.

The First Nation leaders will address supporters and will be available to media following a visit with KI council member Cecilia Begg at the District Jail.

The group will also visit KI Chief Donny Morris, Deputy Chief Jack McKay, Sam McKay, Bruce Sakakeep, and Darryl Sainnawap at Thunder Bay Correctional Facility Friday.

The KI leaders were sentenced to six months in jail Monday for a December 2007 civil contempt of court conviction where the group failed to obey a court order allowing junior mining exploration Platinex Inc. to access KI traditional territory.

The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations citizens in Canada.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation is a political territorial organization representing 49 First Nation communities within James Bay Treaty 9 and the Ontario portions of Treaty 5. KI is a signatory to Treaty 9 (1929).
