Pikangikum First Nation welcomes visit by INAC minister - Projects Co-ordinator report

On January 15, 2008 Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Mr. Chuck Strahl visited the community of Pikangikum First Nation.

He was accompanied by the Grand Chief Stan Beardy and his associates.

He was greeted by the Chief,  Elders and members of the community and followed by luncheon at the local restaurant.

His visit was to see and hear the  presentations on going capital projects like the hydro grid-line project, the new school and Whitefeather Forest Initiative. He did a community tour and clearly saw that there is a need in so many different ways. He also visited the temporary school project, which was completed late November 2007.

He was happy to see the kids back in class and would like to work with us to develop the plan to see what the population is and what the numbers are. He agreed that commitments and promises made will be followed through on and will work closely with the community.

“Minister's may change but that won't change the commitments made” was his comment made to the community.

Also discussed was the opportunity to work with all 3 levels of government in completing this work.

At the end of the day there were gift exchanges.
