AANDC press release
January 20, 2014 - Ottawa, ONTARIO - Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada
The Government of Canada has made available a one-time Personal Credit for educational programs and services to those who have received a Common Experience Payment (CEP) under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.
Personal Credits are available for a wide range of educational programs and services, including those provided by universities, colleges, trade or training schools, Indigenous institutions of higher learning, or those related to literacy.
These Personal Credits are being made available to CEP recipients as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, which was negotiated by legal counsel for former students and the Churches, the Assembly of First Nations, other Aboriginal organizations and the Government of Canada.
"A good quality education is an integral part of reconciliation in that it helps enable First Nation children to develop a strong sense of identity, and the confidence and skills they need to reach their full potential. Our government takes its requirements under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement seriously and we continue to ensure our obligations are fulfilled in the spirit of reconciliation. That is why recipients of the Common Experience Payment (CEP) can now apply to receive non-cash Personal Credits in educational programs and services, for either themselves or certain family members."
