(Saugeen First Nation)- The new network puts the community ahead of the curve from urban counterparts

When it comes to the web, Saugeen First Nation is no longer under-serviced.

The community now has a fibre-to-the-home hybrid network.

The company behind the network is FibreXpress, and President and CEO Antonius Peeters says the Saugeen First Nation is now ahead of the curve.

Residents were on dial-up before the fibre-to-home network and Peeters says that is .03 megabytes per second.

Peeters says projections indicate that people will need about 5-10 megabytes by 2015.

On the new network, Peeters says every home owner in Saugeen First Nation is set at 10 megabytes with the possibility of expanding to 60 megabytes.

Peeters notes that every home is equipped with an optical multi-port network terminal that is ready for telephone, video, Internet and data.

He says the rural network surpasses their urban counterparts.

The service is also available on the Lake Huron Shoreline.

He says the remote tower sites are eco-friendly and powered by solar and wind.

OMAFRA played a large part in the project as well.

The community celebrated the achievement with a celebration Thursday at the James Mason Recreation Centre.
