Assembly of First Nations National Chief Recognizes War of 1812 Bicentennial, Honours First Nation Contributions

OTTAWA, July 13, 2012 /CNW/ - In recognition of its 200^th anniversary, and the over 10,000 First Nation lives lost during the War of 1812, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today expressed gratitude to all veterans, particularly First Nations for their contributions during the war.

"First Nations fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the British in this important conflict," said AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo.  "First Nations engaged as allies just as was agreed to in Treaties, to work together for a better future for all of us. This is, and must, be the way forward - returning to that original relationship, working together based on mutual respect and the implementation of rights and the Treaties."

Commemorating First Nation contributions during the War of 1812 is part of special events taking place next week in Toronto during AFN's 33^rd Annual General Assembly.  Highlights include an Eagle Staff Procession (David Crombie Park 1:45-3:30 p.m.) and Commemorative Memorial Service (Fort York Boulevard, West Gates 4:00-5:30 p.m.) Monday July 16, with more details available at  http://boozhoo.ca/afnhostcommittee/overview.html.

First Nation leaders, Elders and youth from across Canada will gather at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Building) July 17-19 for the Annual Chiefs Assembly and election of National Chief.  Under the theme "Honouring our Traditions: Achieving Action for our Future", First Nation leaders will engage in focused dialogue and strategy sessions for action in advancing First Nation priorities.

The Assembly opens Tuesday morning with opening remarks by National Chief Atleo at 10:00 a.m. and an all candidates forum taking place later that day.  First ballot results of the election for National Chief are expected Wednesday afternoon.  For more information visit www.afn.ca

War of 1812 Procession

On July 16, 2012, First Nation Chiefs, Veterans, Elders, and Youth will lead in an honour procession from Front Street East to Historic Fort York to commemorate the contribution of more than 10,000 First Nations who fought as British Allies in the War of 1812.
