Assembly Of First Nations Leadership Candidates Campaign In Kamloops
Campaigning for Kamloops area support
July 4th, 2012 Story by: Sandy Hall

Three of eight candidates for National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations are campaigning for support in Kamloops.  With incumbent National Chief Shawn Atleo seeking re-election, area First Nations are being asked whether they want to stay the course, or go in a new direction.

Speaking to the masses at the Tk'emlups Pow Wow Arbour, Atleo said he's made changes to the role of National Chief since being elected 3 years ago. He says he's become more of an advocate, pushing for treaty rights to be recognized, and driving improvements in education.  Manitoba lawyer Joan Jack told the crowd she believes in giving more power over decision-making to the regions. Pam Palmater, a mi'kmaq from New Brunswick -- is also a lawyer.  She has been a vocal critic of Atleo's direction, and says although 3 candidates are in Kamloops there are 7 people running against the current leader.  Palmater wants to declare a "state of emergency" around the issues of first nations housing and social conditions.  The election is set for July 18th.
