Live Streaming of Historic First Nations Gathering

January 23 2012

Media coverage of the historic Crown - First Nations Gathering in Ottawa includes live online streaming, as well as special TV coverage from specialty channel operator APTN.

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) National News and Current Affairs team will provide extensive and in-depth coverage with highlights and recaps on TV and the Web, punctuated by social media updates.

Viewers can tune in to APTN and www.aptn.ca for the special coverage, and additional information and video streams will be at the Gathering website.

As well, the event will be covered in interactive video conference feeds for Chiefs across Canada so they can actively participate remotely.

The gathering is aimed at re-setting the relationship between First Nations and the federal government.

It is the first meeting for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the collective First Nation leadership. The gathering includes First Nations leaders, the Prime Minister, and members of Cabinet.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo said the Gathering will be aimed at strengthening the Crown-First Nations relationship and unlocking the full potential of First Nations driven change for progress recognizing and respecting mutual responsibilities and accountability.

First Nations called for this in July 2010 and the Prime Minister agreed to work with the Assembly of First Nations towards this in December 2010.

The gathering builds on the residential school apology, the endorsement of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as well as collaborative efforts like the Specific Claims Tribunal and the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Crown - First Nations Gathering creates the potential to advance a forward-looking agenda.

APTN National News will be in Ottawa to cover the Crown - First Nations Gathering beginning on January 23. APTN will broadcast live coverage of the opening ceremony on January 24. Host Michael Hutchison and the National News team will be on-site to bring live updates and behind-the-scenes coverage throughout the day.

On January 26, the final half of APTN National News will see host Cheryl McKenzie joined by special guests, reflect on the week's events.

APTN is available in approximately 10 million Canadian households and commercial establishments via cable, telco, direct-to-home satellite (DTH), and fixed wireless television service providers.
