ABOUT INDIGENOUS IN THE CITY
This one-hour documentary is the first episode in the 4-part CBC television documentary series 8th Fire, which will air on consecutive Thursdays, at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC-TV's Doc Zone, beginning January 12, 2012.
The 8th Fire programming is a collaborative project between CBC's Doc Zone, CBC Radio and CBC online. The multi-platform project is provocative journey through Aboriginal country, highlighting the urgent need to fix Canada's 500 year-old relationship with Indigenous peoples - a relationship still mired in colonialism, conflict and denial.

Indigenous in the City takes you to the streets of our cities like you've never seen them before, to meet a wildly diverse cast of characters: Rappers who are trying to break free from their criminal pasts, a comic book artist who debunks the notion he only draws buffaloes, a woman who grew up Jewish but now embraces her First Nation heritage, an NHL hockey player who escapes back to his arctic roots, a visual artist whose work shocks the colonizers, and many others.
To a soundtrack of hip hop artists Winnipeg's Most, and rising star Cris Derksen, the film beats down the stereotypical images of addictions, crime, and poverty, and gives us a chance to really meet the neighbors. Shot in high definition and surround sound, this fast paced hour examines how colonization affects us all -aboriginal and non-aboriginal - as we struggle to make ends meet in the city.
This is not your typical documentary. This is a revolutionary experience that will move and shake you.
