Lac Seul First Nation Announces Plans to Improve Road Infrastructure

Lac Seul First Nation, Ontario - July 12, 2011 - Chief Clifford Bull and the Council of the Lac Seul First Nation are pleased to announce the commencement of a major upgrade project for roads that link three of the four First Nation's communities to the provincial roads network.

This $7.2M project will refurbish existing roads that provide access to the communities of Frenchman's Head, Kejick Bay, and Whitefish Bay. Included within the roads to be refurbished is the Goodie Lake Road between the town of Hudson and Frenchman's Head Road, which was the subject of a judicial review launched by the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.

"Lac Seul has been in discussions with our partners in the provincial and federal governments for several years on the roads issue, and we are pleased to now be kicking off this vital infrastructure project." At present, Lac Seul will be providing 100% of this project's financing through utilization of a portion of proceeds from LSFN's recent timber trespass settlement with the Government of Canada. Lac Seul First Nation anticipates a portion of the capital costs of the projects, and that long-term maintenance of the roads network will be accomplished, in conjunction with its federal and provincial partners, as a significant portion of the roads being reconstructed lie on provincial Crown lands.

Lac Seul is located approximately 38 km northwest of Sioux Lookout. Lac Seul First Nation has a large base, which is bounded to the north and east by the Lac Seul reservoir, and is comprised of four on-reserve communities: Kejick Bay, Canoe River, Whitefish Bay, and Frenchman's Head. Lac Seul First Nation is the oldest First Nation in the Sioux Lookout District of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (formerly Indian and Northern Affairs Canada). The reserve was established pursuant to Treaty 3, through adhesion in 1874.
