PRINCIPAL JOB OPPORTUNITY

DEER LAKE FIRST NATION

The Deer Lake First Nation is a small Oji-Cree community which holds 1653.6 hectres of land located approximately 180 kilometres North of Red Lake, Ontario. It is accessible year-round by air and by ice road during a couple winter months. It is connected to Sandy Lake First Nation and North Spirit Lake First Nation during the coldest months of the winter.

Our school offers Kindergarten through Grade 10 programming, it accommodates about 354 students. The school contains a total of ten classrooms; a gymnasium and washroom/shower facilities; a library/resource centre; a multi-purpose facility for Native language and special education uses; a computer room; labs for home economics, science and industrial arts classes; administration and staff rooms. We currently require a Principal for the 2011/2012 school year.

Qualifications:

- Must be a qualified teacher;
- Must follow the prescribed curriculum of the Ministry of Education;
- Must have high standards and expectations for academic achievement, especially in the areas of literacy and numeracy;
- Must be willing to include local families and community members regularly in classroom activities;
- Must be willing to implement First Nations culture into curriculum;
- Must have knowledge of Canadian First Nations cultures and history;
- Must have excellent classroom management skills and utilize the strategies of positive classroom management;
- Must be dedicated to the teamwork approach;
- Must be committed to fulfilling a one year contract;
- Must accommodate and include special needs children by adjusting teaching styles and curriculum as required for inclusion; and

- Any additional duties that are within the scope of employment and, as assigned by the Local Education Authority (LEA).
