The Copper Thunderbird Gallery has opened it's doors to the public. Official Grand Opening is tentatively scheduled before Christmas this year.
The Copper Thunderbird Gallery, a tribute to the renowned artist Norval Morrisseau, has opened its doors to the public in Thunder Bay’s downtown Heart of the Harbour. The gallery’s official Grand Opening Ceremony is tentatively scheduled before Christmas of this year but its doors are open to promote awareness for the general public.
The gallery displays cultural art of the Woodland Art style created by Morrisseau, whose aboriginal name translates to Copper Thunderbird. Now in his seventies and stricken with Parkinson’s Disease, Norval Morrisseau is currently residing in a nursing home in Nanaimo B.C. unable to produce new paintings due to his illness. His artwork is still available at the Copper Thunderbird Gallery along with the works of twelve other artists of the School.
Wolf Morrisseau, the gallery’s Art Director and younger brother of the renowned artist, hopes to promote an educational component along with the showcase and wants to provide a unique place for artists to display and sell their artwork. "I want the gallery’s artists to teach the younger generation the Woodland Style of painting, which should be used to create further awareness of our culture," he says.
The Copper Thunderbird Gallery will be open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, and by appointment on sundays. The complete gallery experience will include events such as shows, auctions and other special events.
