Prospectors Symposium Discusses Ontario’s New Mining Act

Thunder Bay, February 28, 2011: The Boreal Prospectors Association (BPA) will host a crucial symposium on March 1-3, 2011 where diverse stakeholders will review and discuss Ontario’s new Mining Act regulations. The symposium, titled The Changing Landscape, will take place in Sioux Lookout; a northern municipality close to regional mineral prospecting and exploration action.

Over half of the three day agenda will be dedicated to workshops by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines & Forestry (MNDMF). Participants will be provided with the latest information on minerals development issues including updates on the revisions to Ontario’s Mining Act.

Key issues specifically related to working with First Nation communities will be addressed with highlights including: consultation requirements, sites of Aboriginal cultural significance and the capacity of Aboriginal communities to participate in Ontario’s mineral sector.

Says Michael Fox, President of the Boreal Prospectors Association: The landscape of Ontario’s far north is changing dramatically and at an accelerated pace, making it difficult for many stakeholders to keep abreast of the latest trends and Government regulations. This year’s symposium is a unique opportunity to get the most current information on mineral developments and regulatory issues right from the source. The Boreal Prospectors Association is grateful to the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines & Forestry for agreeing to support and participate in this forum. I am certain that there will be some important discussions from diverse voices over the 3 days event.

Also included in the symposium program are a variety of technical presentations and case studies on key mineral trends affecting industry, Government and First Nations.

The Boreal Prospectors Association aims to facilitate positive discussion and constructive information sharing between all mineral stakeholders in our region, continues Fox. Our focus is on bringing together the interests of all stakeholders; individuals, Municipalities, First Nations, industry and Government to address the economic development issues facing all prospectors and exploration companies in northern Ontario.

Registrations for the symposium are still being accepted at chief1@tbaytel.net.
