AFN Honours First Nation Veterans

OTTAWA, Nov. 11 /CNW/ - On Remembrance Day, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo and the AFN Executive Committee paid tribute to all First Nations veterans. Throughout history, First Nations men and women have served with great distinction in the armed forces protecting the values that all Canadians hold dear.

National Chief Atleo stated: "On November 11, we remember and honour all First Nations veterans. This is always a moving and difficult day as we honor the incredible courage of those who lost so much yet made such a tremendous contribution to the fabric of Canadian society.  We must never forget them.

All First Nations leaders stand with our veterans in seeking full recognition of their roles in serving this country. Too many of them are denied benefits and compensation. We must remember and give life to the original relationships as expressed through Treaty that made solemn commitment to alliance and mutual respect. Today, we recognize the role of our Veterans in honouring our Treaty responsibilities and seek this same recognition from the government of Canada."

National Chief Atleo will accompany a delegation of First Nations veterans to Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, on November 11 at 10:30am.

The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations citizens in Canada.
