Sandy Lake First Nation gets $2.1 million for new police facilities
Governments of Canada and Ontario Strengthening Policing Infrastructure for the Sandy Lake First Nation Community
SANDY LAKE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 8, 2010) - Today, Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament (Kenora), on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety announced a joint investment to help the Sandy Lake First Nation build a policing facility that will provide much-needed space for police service providers operating in community.
"Today's announcement will deliver a boost to the local economy and help to better ensure the safety of the Sandy Lake First Nation community through the construction of modern policing infrastructure," said MP Rickford. "Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, as well as effective partnerships with provinces, our Government is delivering better tools so our law enforcement officers can better protect the safety and security of our communities."
The Government of Canada is committing approximately $1.1 million for this project, while the government of Ontario is committing approximately $1 million, for a total investment of $2.1 million.
"This new facility will result in better working conditions for the police officers of the Sandy Lake First Nation, and a safer community for the people they serve," said Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro. "The McGuinty government is committed to the health and safety of First Nations police officers, and will continue to work with our First Nations partners to build modern and sustainable policing services. Investment in improved policing infrastructure is part of the Open Ontario plan to strengthen communities across the province."
Under Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government is delivering $15 million in funding to improve First Nations policing infrastructure. This funding is available to communities currently receiving enhanced funding for police services through Public Safety Canada's First Nations Policing Program (FNPP). Under the FNPP, the Government of Canada provides contribution funding for dedicated and culturally appropriate policing services in First Nations and Inuit communities. The costs are shared by the federal (52%) and provincial (48%) governments.
